The Endocrinology team is dedicated to help Veterans diagnosed with diabetes manage the disease by providing proactive education, a personalized approach and detailed treatment plan. The goal for every patient is the best possible control of diabetes; avoidance of hypoglycemia; prevention of cardiovascular complications associated with diabetes; treatment of hypertension, elevated cholesterol and lipids; and prevention and treatment of other complications of diabetes including eye disease, kidney dysfunction, and neuropathies.
The Wilkes-Barre VA Medical Center offers shared medical appointments for Veterans diagnosed with and managing diabetes. This is a unique, newly-implemented program that brings together Veterans, family members, physicians, and health professionals to find strategic and innovative solutions to control diabetes and learn necessary skills to enjoy maximum success and quality of life.
In conjunction with the MOVE! Program, Endocrinology Service offers a weight management clinic. This is a comprehensive program designed to help individuals in their weight loss journey. The program includes behavioral (including group support), nutritional, and exercise intervention as well as medical treatment and surgical referral when appropriate.
The Women’s Bone Health Clinic provides detailed assessment and evaluation for Veterans with metabolic bone disorders or bone loss caused by various conditions. The team uses a personalized approach to establish an appropriate treatment plan and follow-up course for those patients.
