Disabled American Veterans (DAV) Transportation Program

DAV Transportation Program's areas:  Wilkes-Barre VA Medical Center, Allentown, Berwick/Bloomsburg, Carbondale, Hazleton, Carbon County (Jim Thorpe), Honesdale, Northampton County (Bangor), Selinsgrove/Shamokin, Steamtown (Scranton), Tamaqua, Tobyhanna & Williamsport.

Any Veteran who has a medical appointment at the Wilkes-Barre VA Medical Center is eligible to use the DAV Transportation Services.  At times, the volunteer drivers may receive a request to deliver a Veteran to one of the Community Based Outpatient Clinics for appointment; it is not unusual for a driver to deliver a Veteran to one of those area clinics prior to reporting to the Wilkes-Barre VA Medical Center.

The van drivers are volunteers and are not medical technicians equipped to handle medical emergencies.   The vans are not equipped to transport wheelchair or stretcher patients.  A Veteran’s significant other and/or service dog will be permitted to ride with the Veteran in the vehicle when accompanied with a “Permission to Travel ” slip that has been written by the patient’s Primary Care Provider.  This arrangement should be made at the same time that the arrangement is made to have the Veteran picked up for his/her future appointment.

The Business Office Scheduling is responsible for scheduling Veterans to ride the DAV vans. Contact our Scheduling Department at 570-824-3521 or Toll Free 1-877-928-2621 (#2 Scheduling). All passengers are pre-approved for DAV transportation by their primary care physician.   The drivers will give each Veteran riding the transportation van an identification tag upon arrival at the Medical Center, or Clinic.  The purpose of the tag is to help the Medical Clerk expedite appointments as necessary to assure a timely return home.

Questions regarding the DAV Transportation Program can be referred to the Program Coordinator at 570-824-3521, ext. 7925.

The Transportation Program is subsidized by the Disabled American Veterans (DAV) through donations and is the means through which many area Veterans with no transportation get to the Wilkes-Barre facility for their appointments.

Volunteers interested in serving those who served should contact Vince Riccardo, Acting Chief, Voluntary Service at the Wilkes-Barre Medical Center, Toll-Free at 1-877-928-2621, x7237; or Leonard Croop, DAV Patient Transportation Program Coordinator, x7925.
