Moving Forward
“I can testify that I actually came up with some solutions to my problem which I had not previously considered and actually worked.” Marc Kovalchik
The Wilkes-Barre VA Medical Center is proud to offer a new class for Veterans called Moving Forward, a class that meets once a week for four consecutive weeks. Conducted in a classroom setting, the program teaches practical problem-solving skills to help participants overcome obstacles that stand in the way of goals. This educational and life coaching program is an evidenced-based practice, meaning it is proven by research to be effective.
Marc Kovalchik, clinical nurse specialist, learned firsthand the positive impacts of the tools provided while training to facilitate the program. “When I was at the program workshop, we were invited to use this method to assist us in solving a problem of our own,” said Kovalchik. “I can testify that I actually came up with some solutions to my problem which I had not previously considered and actually worked.”
Life can be filled with constant challenges and problems. These problems make it difficult to achieve life’s goals. This is especially true when undergoing a new life change, such as transitioning back to civilian life. Difficulties also arise when under a lot of stress. Stress can involve money problems, relationship concerns, job issues, or health challenges. When stress becomes too great, it can prevent people from reaching their goals. In addition, stress can lead to emotional distress, as well as physical health problems. When this occurs, many people feel overwhelmed and confused about knowing what to do. This program was developed to help Veterans “move forward” in their lives.
The program was originally designed for Operation Enduring Freedom/Iraqi Freedom/New Dawn Veterans who are not currently in mental health treatment, and are returning back to civilian life. However, many other Veterans may benefit from the education provided on problem solving and are invited to join the classes. To find out more, and sign up for the class, call extension 7737 or 4246. The class will be facilitated by Marc Kovalchik, clinical nurse specialist.
