There are many ways for Veterans to make health care appointments.

  • If you don’t have VA health care benefits, you can apply now. Apply for VA health care.
  • If you’re having a medical emergency, please call 911 or call the Veterans Crisis Line at 1-800-273-8255, then press 1.

Online

VA now offers online appointment scheduling for some appointments. We hope to expand the number of VA facilities and types of appointments in the future.

  • Send messages about requested appointments
  • Get notifications about appointments

Upgrade your Existing Accounts

At VAMC Wilkes-Barre, we have established a number of procedures to assist you in getting an appointment without a long delay.  Basically, there are two types of appointments:

1Same Day Needs Appointment - follow the process stated below if you:

Require an appointment within 24 hours:
  - Need Medication Prescription Renewal
  - Non-Medical Emergency (immediate issue)

Process: 

 -  Call our toll free number (1-877-928-2621)
 - You will get the operator message, At the prompt,  "If you know your party's extension, please dial it now"...  - You will get the operator message. At the 2nd prompt, ("if you are calling to schedule an appointment press #2") - All calls from this prompt will be directed to our Central Scheduling Unit (CSU).  (Calls are answered in the order they are received.)


2Open Access Appointment - follow the process stated below if you:

-  Receive a reminder letter 30 days before your next visit
-  Receive a 2nd reminder letter 14 days before your next visit
-  Just want to check on your upcoming appointments

 Process: 
Call our toll free number (1-877-928-2621)
-  You will get the operator message, At the 2nd prompt,  ("if you are calling to schedule an appointment press #2")
-  All calls from this prompt will be directed to our Central Scheduling Unit (CSU).  (Calls are answered in the order they are received.)
-  You will then be personally assisted with scheduling your Open Access Appointment(s).


Cancel or Change Your Appointment

If you cannot keep an existing appointment, please contact the CSU as soon as you are aware that you cannot make your appointment at (1-877-928-2621 - Press #2).  You will then be offered the opportunity to reschedule your appointment.  This will allow us to reschedule one of your fellow veterans.      

Note:   If you cancel a specialty/consult clinic appointment more than one time, or do not keep a scheduled specialty appointment, it will be necessary for you to contact your health care provider for another consult/referral to that clinic.

Information to Help You Decide about Where to Receive Your Care

VA has a regularly updated Access to Care website that provides useful information that can help you to decide the best VA location for you to receive your care. Before making an appointment, you can find out the following information for a VA location:

  • Wait times for primary care, mental health, and some of the commonest specialties
  • If same day services are available in primary care and mental health
  • If Telehealth is available in primary care and mental health
  • If it has an emergency room
  • Facility contact information
  • Veteran satisfaction scores
  • Quality information comparing each VA and local area non-VA healthcare facilities
